An assessment of Trinidad and Tobago's Marine Surveillance Capability for protecting the Marine Environment and its Resources OceanDocs
Rambath-Parasram, V..
Trinidad and Tobago has declared various maritime zones consistent with the provisions of the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. The uses of these zones are extensive ranging from trade-related to recreational activities. Monitoring such a wide range of users is a challenge for many States and requires a comprehensive regulatory regime capable of empowering the relevant authorities with the means for its effective implementation. While the domestic legal and institutional framework governing marine environmental protection and conservation lags far behind that of the international arena, thereby rendering many of the applicable international laws non-operational, there are various institutions that are involved in protecting and...

Aperçu sur les droits traditionnels de la pêche dans la législation sénégalaise OceanDocs
Seck, A..

Chilled raw milk quality: a case study in Zona da Mata region, Minas Gerais State, Brazil Ciência Rural
Lima,Luiz Paulo de; Braga,Gustavo Bastos; Perez,Ronaldo; Carvalho,Antonio Fernandes de.
ABSTRACT: This paper aimed to analyze the evolution of the quality of raw milk produced by producers in the Zona da Mata region, in the state of Minas Gerais, between 2012 and 2018. For this purpose, we used the linear mixed-effects model to analyze the monthly evolution of the results of milk composition indicators (fat, protein, and defatted dry extract - DDE), somatic cell count - SCC, and total bacterial count - TBC, from the official monthly registry of 94 milk producers, suppliers of a region’s dairy. Results indicate a continuous reduction in the milk composition indicators between 2014 and 2018. For the SCC and TBC indicators, we identified only one-off reductions. The supply of a larger volume of milk was associated with increased TBC. Seasonality...

Coastal Zone Management in the Mediterranean: Legal and Economic Perspectives AgEcon
Markandya, Anil; Arnold, S.; Cassinelli, Mariaester; Taylor, Tim J..
This paper examines existing measures taken to protect the coastal zones of the Mediterranean Sea and assesses their success. A summary of the main pressures facing these zones is given, followed by an analysis of the legislation covering coastal zone development in ten countries: Algeria, Croatia, Egypt, France, Israel, Italy, Malta, Spain, Tunisia and Turkey. We find that not all of these states have legislation specifically covering coastal zones, but there is concern in all areas that the legislation is not working, We also look at the costs and benefits of controlling coastal development. Firstly, a literature review of valuation studies identifies a range of values placed on developed and undeveloped coastline for both users and local property...

Comparison of National and International Standards of Good Egg Production Practices Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Sousa,GP; Pereira,DF; Watanabe,K; Cataneo,PF.
ABSTRACT Egg production is an important economic activity in Brazil, with about 697 million eggs produced annually. The conventional cage system is commonly used for egg production. However, there has been a growing concern for the welfare of laying hens around the world. In this context, many countries have issued laws, protocols, and other normative technical specifications to ensure the welfare of layers. This study aims at identifying similarities and differences between international standards and Brazilian protocols using the Comparative Law perspective. This article reports an analytical study of selected protocols, performing three analyses using the Comparative Law method. The research concludes that some items of the Brazilian protocols of good...

Depuration: An administrative overview ArchiMer
Somerset, I.
At the 1964 National Shellfish Sanitation Workshop, Mr. Eugene Jensen presented a thought-provoking paper outlining the rationale for the depuration of shellfish. Mr. Jensen noted that "we are committed to the principal that shellfish must be as safe to eat as other ordinary food" and that "the problems of assuring the sanitary quality of coastal areas will increase rather than diminish. This is not the same as saying that pollution will increase" (Jensen, 1964). It is recognised that additional use of the waters and shore areas will have adverse impacts on the water quality and shellfish resource quantity and quality. If we are to maintain a program which will permit the consumer to eat shellfish in any form they choose, we must develop the means to...

Drivers of Resident Support for Animal Care Oriented Ballot Initiatives AgEcon
Tonsor, Glynn T.; Wolf, Christopher A..
Recent high profile incidents and public debates in the United States have highlighted the increasing interest residents have regarding animal rearing and handling practices. This paper examines resident support for national legislation that mirrors Proposition 2, which in November 2008 passed in California. Results suggest perceptions regarding animal welfare information accuracy of livestock industry and consumer groups are particularly influential determinants of voting behavior and demand. The analysis also suggests residents may not fully appreciate price or tax implications when supporting additional animal welfare legislation. Implications for livestock industry and policy makers are provided along with suggestions for additional research.

Cún, M.; Campos, J..
The present work is a study of the fishery of Panulirus gracilis (Green spiny lobster) in the ports of Chanduy, El Real and Anconcito in the north east of the Gulf of Guayaquil 58, 252 specimens caught in the 10 year period 1970 to 1979 were examined. A comparison was made of the sizes of lobsters caught with the established regulation for the explotation of the crustaceans. It was found that both the monthly and annual mean sizes were maintained above the ”minimum permitted length” which is 25 cm total length. Males predominated over females in the ratio 2:1. The percentage of males was 66,5% and of females 33,5%. During the period of the study, berried females of various sizes were frequently found, being most abundant in the months of May, June and July...

OceanDocs
Ould Mohamed Vall, M..

European Union Agricultural Policy Institutions and Decision Making Processes AgEcon
Vaughan, Odette; Tanguay, Luc; Gilmour, Brad.
This note examines European Union (EU) institutions and policy making processes in relation to its agriculture and food sector. With a market comprised of 495 million people across 27 countries and a comprehensive agricultural policy accounting for the largest share of the EU budget, how the EU policy environment functions is important to Canada. Decisions are made at the supranational EU level for agriculture, fisheries, trade, and regional development, while decision-making related to other policies occurs at the individual country level or through a system of inter-governmental cooperation. Decision-making occurs in three institutions: the Commission, the Council and the Parliament. Agriculture negotiations typically begin with a text drafted by the...
